BIRTHDAY boy Darren Cox gave himself a present to remember winning the £25,000 cheque, White Acres Skol Masters 2002 title and massive new trophy in a heart stopping dramatic end to the 12-angler winner take all final at the Cornish country park. With 15 minutes left in the four hour event on Jenny's lake Darren was one of a quartet of anglers still in contention when he struck into an 8 lb carp.
"Can you hear my heart beating," he said to the watching press as he battled with that oh so important final fish. UK¹s Garbolino product development manager Darren, aware how vital the fishwas, endured a twenty minute scrap with the fighting fit ghost common before scooping it from the water five minutes after the whistle and to rapturous applause he shouted "Yes

But it was still a tentative wait at the weigh-in as West Midlands policeman Wayne Mellings first put 41-9-0 on the scales from peg 5 then former Fish'O' Mania champion Steve Ringer took the lead with 43-1-0 on peg 6.However when the scales arrived at Darren's peg 16 the big crowd knew as he lifted his catch from the water he¹d done enough to take the lead confirmed by a 50-6-0 reading. With Daiwa Dorking captain Steve Sanders, the remaining threat to Darren's bid, falling short with 36-2-0 it was time for the celebrations to begin and Darren leaped into the lake for a celebratory dip!

At the start of the match Darren fed a blend of liquidised meat and Sensas Crazy Bait Gold topping up regularly and fishing punched Plumrose garlic meat on the hook but despite plenty of signs of feeding fish in the peg struggled to catch at full depth. Changing to a shallower rig and presenting the hook bait at half depth proved inspired and sorted out a succession of brown goldfish averaging around the 1 lb mark to keep him in contact with the front runners. Moving into the last hour the reigning Kamasan British Open champion and Drennan Team England Six Nations cap turned up the heat and was the only angler at that stage catching steadily and he added a couple of 2 lb carp before the fateful ghostie came along.

"It's an absolutely unbelievable feeling, what a birthday," said Darrenspeaking immediately after the result was confirmed. "I can¹t believe it," he said as he cuddled daughter Charlotte and was joined by wife Julie. "It¹s up to Julie what happens to the money, I'm in it for the prestige," said Darren who revealed that Julie is expecting their second child.

MAKING the final dozen was again a hard fought affair but included in the line up were a number of repeat performers plus some surprise packets and Jenny's lake produced a true fishing match in a keenly contested event where several anglers could have won. Both Steve Sanders and 2000 Skol Master Alex Murray made it through for an incredible third time each while Shakespeare grouped Mark Warren and Preston Innovations backed Des Shipp were there for a second consecutive year. Daiwa Dorking skipper Steve made a strong bid on the pole landing some quality carp on the pole from peg 19 ending with 36-2-0 in fourth place. For Murray a steady day resulted in 21-14-0 in sixth place at peg 18 while Mark Warren's 20-2-0 from the narrowing peg 13 was eighth. Des Shipp from 15 conjured up 32-0-0 but counted the cost of an estimated 13 lb ghost carp he lost after playing for several minutes early in the match and he had to settle for fifth place. However Kevin Arathoon and Wayne Mellings proved that it¹s not only household names who make it to the final as they made their debuts and while Coca Cola backed Kevin found peg 5 unyielding with 13-8-0 only enough for tenth place, dog handler Wayne made a magnificent effort with 41-9-0 on the feeder from peg 6 to take the third place. Eventual runner up and former Fish 'O'Mania champion Steve Ringer built up an early lead on the feeder at peg five landing three fish for 11 lb in the opening half an hour but his 43-1-0 effort was edged out by that dramatic last gasp ghost carp for Darren Cox. The field was completed by Drennan backed Paul Yates ninth on 15-3-0 from the unfancied peg 12, Tricast Mosella¹s Kieron Rich seventh with 21-10-0 off peg 9, and Keenets Northwest duo Paul Keeley and Gary Powell 12th and 11th respectively with 7-0-0 and 10-9-0 from pegs 21 and 22.

SKOL WILL BE BACK

THE Skol Masters will be back next year once again as the officials from the events joint backers St Austell Brewery, Skol and White Acres announced that the original three year deal would be extended to next year.

WALSALL West Midland¹s based Wayne Mellings clinched the £2000 cheque and his place in the Skol Masters 12-man final with a 35 point return in the five day White Acres Skol Masters Festival. In a week when many star names dropped points left right and centre Wayne was alone in achieving one point short of a maximum and his efforts also earned him Bill Knott's Man of The Match prize of Preston Innovations gear. Wayne kicked off his charge with a section win at Bolingey with 24-12-0 of carp from peg 7 after adopting a crumb feeder approach.
Pollawyn's peg 22 saw a second day lake win for the 35-year-old constable who has been with the West Midland's force 12-years stationed at Wednesbury, after he poled meat at 16 metres to the island for 64-13-0 of carp to 9lb. After struggling for three hours on canal lake's peg 11 Wayne's belief that the fish would come late proved correct and he put together eight pastie carp for 20-0-0 worth a section second.
Gwinear's peg 57 on the penultimate day proved tough slipping to a section fourth with three carp for 15-3-0 forming his dropped result. Wayne went to Porth on the final day knowing he needed to be in the top three of his section to make the Grand Final and he pulled it off with 14-9-0 of skimmers on the tip to claim another section win his week's efforts adding another £300 in pools monies to his main cheque. "I have had a brilliant week," said Wayne, "I don't think I could have done any more than I did in the final even though I lost two big carp that might have proved decisive they just tore off round the island before I could release the line clip," he reflected.
Preston Innovations star Des Shipp nicked the runner-up slot and £900 cheque with 34 points edging Kieron Rich into third with a superior weight of 254-15-0 to 216-3-0. Bottles of champagne were provided in addition to the cash prizes for the top 15 anglers in the festival and another six lucky recipients received cheques for £100 in the mystery weight draw.

BEN'S BLAST OFF

FORMER White Acres match record holder Ben Leach, the first man to surpass the 200 lb barrier on the Pollawyn pool, nearly became the first man to break the 300 lb barrier when he blasted away the Gwinear match record with 294-0-0 worth £100 as the biggest winning weight of the week. Bagger Ben from Bath, drew fancied peg 31 on the end of the island and hooked carp from start to finish in the 5-hour contest on day three of the Festival.
"I had the first bite after about ten seconds then it was an 8-pounder a chuck thereafter," said Ben who made the most of the massive head of the venues fat mirrors gathered over his chopped worm, caster and corn feed. "It was easy fishing really but I lost four or five at the net and I know I could and should have had that 300 lb," reflected 21-year-old Daiwa Dorking grouped Ben. A Daiwa Spectron pole fitted with black Hydrolastic, 0.19 mm Preston Innovations Powerline direct, a 4x14 PI series C float and size 14 Kamasan B911 hook comprised Ben's record breaking gear.

BIGGEST FISH
Keith Vaughan claimed the £50 cheque for the biggest fish of the festival with a 13 lb 7 oz Bolingey beast.
