First of 2009 - Bait Tech
Fishing Information call 01726 862519
Well I can hardly believe it but it is festival time already!
It only seems like yesterday the park closed and now we have 180 anglers here for the 2009 Bait Tech Festival, it is unusual for us to open straight into a festival like we have done this year so it is going into a bit of the unknown for all seeing as the lakes really haven't been fished since November.
The Bait Tech is our only traditional festival where we do not allow the use of pellets, this year there are a lot of new faces on the festival as well as our regulars who like this format and is one of the only festival they fish here. The scene has been set for the festival and after a weekend of re-familiarising them selves with the lakes (or the pub in most cases!) we are ready for the off. The week and weekend leading up to the festival has been fairly mild and sunny but we can't forget it is only March and the weather is due to change any time with the temperature taking a significant drop and the wind increasing. So watch this space for what this week's festival brings us.
Day One
The morning starts with the clarification of the rules, reminding everyone that it is a pellet free festival and that we have re-introduced the 16-meter pole limit. The anglers are keen to make their first draw of the week and to get the festival started. The skies might be blue but the wind is fairly strong and bitterly cold and fishing the longer pole might be a struggle for some in places where it is needed.
A Section Pollawyn
Pollawyn has been stocked over the winter with an additional 400 carp from 1 - 4lb but what we have found, and today was no exception was that with the cold-water temperature most of the carp are still shoaled up in the arms. Vince Brown was todays lakes winner with 68lb 12oz, Vince was on peg 47 and caught on the pole with meat & hemp down the track and across at 14.5 meters. Second on peg 7 was Steve Cooke, Steve caught on the pole at 16 meters down the middle into deep water with meat for a weight of 64lb 15oz. Carl Eland was third on peg 52, Carl caught 10 fish down the edge on meat at 14 meters and 6 out to the island on meat for a weight of 62lb 8oz. The next best weight on the lake came from Doug Wright on peg 13, Doug caught on the bomb to the island and down the edge on meat for a weight of 60lb 6oz.

Steve Mitchell peg 18 9 points 55lb 8oz
Barry Oliver peg 16 9 points 55lb 5oz
B Section Jennys & Python
The wind was howling up on Jennys today which definitely hampered with the anglers presentation and being able to fish long but on Python it was a different story, Python has been changed and re-stocked over the winter which has greatly benefited the lake and today we had some of the best weights coming from the lake that we had ever seen this early in the year. The match was won by Tommy Pickering on Python peg 22; Tommy caught 81 F1's at 11.5 on groundbait with maggot on the hook for a weight of 65lb 8oz. Mick Cook had a weight of 65lb 6oz to take second, Mick was on Python peg 32 and caught on the pole with meat. Day Two
Day one of the festival got off to a good start and it is on wards and upwards from here, today the fishing has been mixed with Pollawyn fishing well but after their initial feed the fish have back off at Bolingey, the other lakes have all fished about the same as yesterday and despite fishing hard we saw some good weights come from Porth. Those who started their week off with a section win hoped to equal this whilst others who didn’t have the best start were hoping for better things today. Read on for the match action and to see if anyone has held on to the maximum points so far.

It was a slight disappointment for some today on Bolingey after yesterdays match weights, but we cannot forget that it is only March and the water temperature is still low, the carp had initial feeding frenzy yesterday but seemed to back off today and this was reflected in the weights but these were still respectable for the time of year. As we all know anything can happen from this point and we are imminently due a change in weather so lets see what happens from here.
Day Three
So we have reached the mid-way point of the festival and it is still an open race, the weather overnight has been shocking with ferocious winds and rain but this seems to have cleared and although it is bitterly cold and windy then rain has held off for the match. Those with high section points are hoping for another great result today and some that are lagging behind have upped their game to claw back a few positions. Read on for match action from day three.

E Section Jennys & Python
The anglers are definitely reaping the benefits from the work that has been done on Python over the winter as the lake is now easily able to compete with the weights from Jennys, in previous festivals where this combination of lakes has been used Jennys has dominated the overall money but this year Python has definitely provided more “golden envelopes†for the anglers. So we have both a festival veteran and a festival newcomer both on maximum points, the weights in the top twenty (and beyond) are really impressive for the time of year and with the points as close as they are these weights could play a key factor in the results that will be announced on Friday evening. So two days left of matches and with the points as close as they are it looks like the stage has been set for a nail biting finish. Stay tuned for the next update.
Further congratulations to todays lake winners Vince Brown, Richard Kinning, Steve Ringer, Steve Mayo & Jon Gray who by winning their matches today have won a free holiday and an invitation to come back and fish the winners week festival in October.
Day Four
So we have reached the penultimate day of the festival and the week seems to have flown by. So far the anglers have seen some ups and downs and we have had an ever changing top twenty although there are few anglers hanging on in there. It was a cold and rainy start to day four and the forecast didn’t bode well but fortunately the rain had stopped by the all-in and we were set for another exciting day. Read on for the match action from day four and find out how the leader board looks as we go into the final day.
A Section Porth
Porth generally fished better today, there were more skimmers showing and the anglers were getting more bites, the overall weights are still coming from across all the sections and today was no exception. There was a joint weight for second on the lake with both Tim Dabrowa and Nick Crouch weighing in with 10lb 12oz. C Section Pollawyn
Mixed fortunes on the lake today with the fish moving further up the lake and out of the arms, the way the lake is fishing there are still no favoured areas as the weights have been coming from all over, accept for in the arms where some anglers have struggled for bites but the vital section points are still up for grabs and it is one of our closest sections. Our lake winner today was Dean Lock, Dean was on peg 16 and caught on the straight lead with meat for a weight of 81lb. John Pantry was second with 75lb 7oz, and John caught also on the straight lead with meat from peg 15. We can positively assume that some of the names above will feature in our top twenty but it which order we do not know.
There were a few dejected faces at the draw this morning with their drawing arms failing them and there were one or two virtually skipping to their pegs but it is all still to play for so we will all have to watch this space to find out who will be the Bait Tech champion 2009.
Final Day
Well what a week we have had, I hope everyone has enjoyed the festival as much as us. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors Bait Tech and Wendy for joining us for the presentation; all of the competitors received a bulging goodie bag of Bait Tech products in the morning at the draw. The final day is always fraught with excitement and anticipation as it is do or die for some when it comes to the draw bag. No catch information today I'm afraid, as they had either gone home or too hung over to remember! But here are the overalls from the lakes and the section winners. It was a wet final day and although the wind had gone it was still bitterly cold.

The whole of the fisheries team would like to thank all of the anglers that took place in the final and especially our winners Steve Mayo (Maver/Bait Tech), Giles Cochrane (MAP) and Steve Ringer (Guru/Shimano). This week has proven that all of our hard work over the winter has paid off and once again the venues fishing is back on form.
Once again thank you to all for your support and to Bait Tech for their sponsorship.
Cheers, Kirsty
